Caliph Abderramán III (a muslim king) ordered to built this castle or alcazaba (from the Arabic al-qasabah) when he decided to make Almería the main harbor of Córdoba caliphate (muslim kingdom) and the headquarters of its navy in the 10th century.
Abderramán also ordered to build the city walls and a big mosque, fact which granted Almería the title of medina (city in Arabic).
From the top of the castle towers you can have a panoramic view of the gulf of Almería, a large swathe of the Mediterranean Sea that can be easily watched and controlled from it. This fact is related to the most probable origin of the name Almería: the watch tower.
In the opposite side of La Alcazaba main gate you can find the statue of another famous muslim king of Almería. Can you find out the name of the king represented in this statue?
Write down the answer in your note book.
