We are in one of the widest and longest avenues in Almería. An old watercourse was channeled between 1891-1897 to protect the surrounding neighbourhoods from floodings caused regularly by autumn heavy rains.
One of the biggest and most damaging floodings happened on 11th September 1891. In the lower part of La Rambla, there is a monument which commemorates that event.
The image of La Rambla changed in 2000 after the new avenue was built over the old channel that now lies underground. Along the new avenue you can find many fountains that remind of the original water course down to the seaside. It is also a reminder that Almería is a city open to de Mediterranean Sea where all main streets run down until meeting the seaside.
We are just in front of one of those fountains. Could you calculate the height of the central obelisk?
Write down the answer in your notebook.
