3. PLAZA VIEJA

We are in Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Square) better know among locals as Plaza Vieja (Old Square). In the east side you can find the City Hall that at the moment (since 2005) is under construction. Originally built in the end of the19th century by Trinidad Cuartara, a local arquitect, the building has kept its original look.

In the middle of the square you can find the Monumento a los Mártires de la Libertad (Monument to the Martyrs of Liberty) that honors a group of liberals who fought for freedom and rights against the absolutist king Fernando VII's policies in the 19th century. The liberals where arrested and sentenced to death penalty. They were executed on august 24th 1824.

Locals give the monument a very peculiar name. Can you find out what name is that? Ask passers-by if necessary.

Write down the answer in your notebook.
