From La Rambla we have passed through an area of the city that was built during the 19th century, but the city dates back to 995, in the 10th century, being founded by the muslims, although in the old town you can find also Roman remains.
In this area it was located one of the main gates of the original muslim town, and a large wall protected it and separated it form the farmland that was located in the area we have just walked through.
In the 19th century that wall was pulled down to built El Paseo de Almería, or simply El Paseo as locals call it. As other main streets and avenues in Almería it also runs down to meet first La Rambla and then the seaside.
Around Puerta de Purchena you can see some bourgeois buildings from the 19th century. There is also a statue of a famous almerian. Can you find out who is represented in this the statue? Why is he famous? Ask passers-by if necessary.
